One of the biggest influences on our pop culture is movies. Movies entertain us, but they can also be educational. They help us learn more about the world.
That is until they don’t.
You see, sometimes movies do not portray life as it really happens. They do this to make the story we’re watching more entertaining. Due to this, there are many myths that we believe to be true from watching movies. This list is going to look at 10 movie myths that movies have made us believe.

They say that art imitates life. How we live, speak, think, and feel are reflected in our forms of art. Things such as music, art, literature, and of course, cinema.

There are times, however, when movies deceive us.
It is important to remember that movies are a form of entertainment, and not always meant to be interpreted literally.
Let’s take a look at some of the myths movies have made us believe.

How Chloroform Works

Myth: Chloroform immediately knocks someone unconscious for several hours.
Truth: It takes up to five minutes for chloroform to affect a person and the effects wear off quickly.

Tracing a Phone Call

Myth: Tracing a phone call takes time.
Truth: The police can trace a phone call as soon as it begins thanks to location tracking technology. This goes for landlines as well as cell phones. The only exception is prepaid phones.

Pulling a Grenade Pin

Myth: Pulling out a grenade pin with your teeth is easy to do.
Truth: Grenade pins are designed to be difficult to pull out. If you tried to pull one out with your teeth, you won’t have teeth anymore.

When Can Cops Read You Your Rights?

Myth: Police usually read a suspect their rights while they are being handcuffed.
Truth: The police do have to read a suspect their Miranda rights, but it does not have to be while being taken into custody. It usually happens after the suspect is already in custody.

When Can You Report a Missing Person?

Myth: A person must wait 24 hours before reporting someone missing.
Truth: Police have stressed the importance of reporting a missing person as soon as possible. This gives them the best chance at finding them.

How Many Phone Calls do You Get?

Myth: The police only allow you to make one phone call.
Truth: There is no limit to how many phone calls a person can make while in police custody.

A Shark’s sense of Smell

Myth: Sharks can smell blood in the water from miles away.
Truth: While a shark does have a good sense of smell, it is not so good that they can smell from anywhere.

A Defibrillator will Restart a Person’s Heart

Myth: Using a defibrillator will restart a person’s heart.
Truth: A defibrillator cannot restart a person’s heart if it stops. They are actually used to stop a person’s heart if need be.

Laser Guns Make Colors

Myth: Laser guns firing in space make a beautiful color show.
Truth: If laser guns were to be fired in space, they would most likely be invisible. Light needs a surface to reflect off of to become visible, so they would only show once they’ve hit a target.

Dual-Wielding Guns

Myth: Wielding two guns will help someone inflict more damage.
Truth: dual-wielding anything, let alone guns is highly impractical and can actually lessen your chances of hitting a target.
