Hello Readers,
Today I will be giving my review for Spider-Man: Far From Home directed by Jon Watts. The film was distributed by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Let’s dive in!
The first thing I want to say is that the direction in this film is way better than Spider-Man: Homecoming, the director’s previous MCU outing. Director Jon Watts improved his directing style in just about every way. The action, the comedy, and the cinematography are all better this time around. He also managed to keep the things that worked about Homecoming, such as his ability to create tension without the scenes feeling heavy or overbearing. Overall the direction in this movie is spot on thanks to Jon Watts.

Speaking of the comedy, the humor in this film is just spot on. It is well-timed and doesn’t distract from the serious points in the film. One of the stand-out parts of the comedy was the character of Mr. Harringtion portrayed by Martin Starr. Starr really got to shine and his dialogue and interaction with the cast are just perfect. One of my issues with Homecoming is that the humor didn’t always land with me. Some parts were funny and some weren’t and even the parts that were funny when I first saw the film became less so after a few watches. I am happy to say that this is not the case with this movie. I recently rewatched it in preparation for this review and I laughed at everything that I did when I saw the movie in theaters. The comedy in this film is so well done, I believe it will be enjoyed for years to come.
Another aspect of the film that will be talked about is special effects. As I said, Jon Watts really stepped up his game in terms of the special effects in this film. One scene that is a testament to this is the “Mysterio Illusion Battle.” In the scene, Mysterio attempts to kill Peter by using his illusion technology to make Peter see all kinds of horrifying images. Some of those images include his crush MJ falling off the Eiffel Tower, broken statues of the Avengers, and even a zombie Iron Man. The scene is both chilling and thrilling to watch, even though it is entirely CGI. I’ll include a clip of the scene below so you can watch it yourself.
While the action, comedy, and special effects were all amazing aspects of the film, one aspect that was also amazing was the performances of the actors. I thought all of the actors played their roles well, but I want to specifically highlight Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Quentin Beck/Mysterio). Tom Holland is absolutely amazing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He brings so much depth and angst to Peter while also delivering funny quips as Spider-Man. He was absolutely the right choice to play the role of Peter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then there was Jake Gyllenhaal, who was perfect for the role of Mysterio. He was eloquent and charming, then switched to totally unhinged by the end of the film. I was glad to see Gyllenhaal in the MCU and he gave a great performance.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is about perception vs. deception. This movie picks up right where Avengers: Endgame left off. The world is restored, but still vulnerable. This is also the case for Peter Parker, who is still recovering from the loss of his mentor, Tony Stark. He is struggling to figure out who he is as a hero and where he fits in now that Tony is gone. He isn’t ready to fill his shoes. Enter Mysterio, Quentin Beck, a soldier from another universe. He seems like just the person that both Peter and the world needed right now. So Peter gives all his responsibility to Mysterio and continues to pursue his teenage desires. It turns out Beck is a fake and want to abuse this power for his own gain. So Spider-Man must realize that is ready for the responsibility but has to go about it in his own way. The perception theme is about Peter and how he views himself as a hero and the deception is Quentin Beck, who takes advantage of Peter’s vulnerability to gain access to the power that Tony Stark had. To defeat Mysterio, Peter must overcome his vulnerable perception of himself to see through Mysterio’s deception.

Overall, this is a very entertaining film to watch. Every aspect of the film works together perfectly to deliver a movie that is both entertaining and emotional. The MCU has done a great job of making the character of Spider-Man someone relatable to many different people. I really didn’t find any flaws with the film, I loved it from start to finish. I recommend seeing Spider-Man: Far From Home.
My Rating: 5/5★
